Toncontin International Airport , Honduras 2nd largest international airport behind San Pedro Sula'sRamon Villeda Morales International Airport is located a short 3 1/2 miles from downtown Tegucigalpa, the Capital of Honduras. A mixed public and military airport, Toncontin International Airport is the 7th busiest airport in Central America.
Toncontin International Airport is considered to be one of the most dangerous airports in Central America due to its closeness to the mountains and the steep curving approach to runway 02 . With one runway, 02/20 at 6109 feet the airport is not cable of handling the largest of the world's airlines. The largest airplane to land on a consistent basis is the Boeing 757. Inaugurated in 1934 with a landing by a DC-3 from Pan American Airways, today Toncontin International Airport has become a International player with flights arriving from the United States, and throughout Central America as well as domestic connections around Honduras.
Toncontin International Airport is home to Honduras AVIAC and CM Airlines. The airport has 4 gates with 2 in a new terminal that is used for international flights with the older terminal under renovation and will be used for domestic flights. The terminal provides the traveling public with the most common amenities, such as a bank, post office, bureau of change as well as several restaurants and duty free shops.
