 Brazil’s second busiest airport is located also in the city of Sao Paulo, Congonhas/São Paulo Airport or Congonhas Airport CGH/ SBSP, the busiest being Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport. Located just a short 5 miles from the city center the airport took it's name " Congonhas" from the congonha plant that was prevalent in the area before the airport was built.
Congonhas Airport started operations in 1936 as the exclusive airport for now defunct airline VASP " Viaco Aera Sao Paulo" Today Congonhas Airport is home to two of Brazil's largest airlines, GOL "Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes" and TAM "Linhas Areas"
Congonas Airport up untill 1985 was Sao Paulos main airport at which time Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport opened 15 miles to the east of Sao Paulo re leaving congested Congonas Airport of International traffic. Today with two short and parallel runways (17R/35L at 6365 and 17L/35R at 4708) Congonhas Airport now best serves Brazil's domestic and regional flights.
Located on a plateau, Congonas Airport is best known for its spectacular views while taking off and landing among the large and concentrated tall buildings making up the surrounding area of Sao Paulo city.
Congonhas Airport has one main central terminal and two wings. The central terminal area which has been upgraded since 2004, yet keeping the architectural and historical outside of the terminal intact.
