San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is the major air travel hub of Puerto Rico, and serves as both a civilian and military base of air transportation for the island. Over 10 million passengers arrive and depart the airport each year, and it is conveniently located in the suburb of Carolina, only 4 miles from downtown San Juan. The main commercial terminal is segmented into five concourses, with a large parking garage directly in front of the arrival/departure hall. The facility lies between the Laguna La Torrecilla on the east side, and Laguna Los Corozos to the west, and is situated near the coast, about 10 feet above sea level.
Built in 1955, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport has undergone major renovations and expansion. Operated by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, it has a total of 2 runways that serve as the takeoff and landing areas for over 20 commercial airlines. Because of its close proximity to downtown San Juan, getting to and from the airport is particularly easy, with many forms of ground transportation available at the main terminal building.
Because Puerto Rico is an associated U.S. commonwealth, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport can be considered like in other in the United States, meaning that U.S. citizens are not required to declare possessions or go through customs, if arriving on a domestic flight. Passengers arriving from foreign destinations must pass through immigrations.
Airlines serve Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport from major cities in North America, Europe, and the entire Caribbean region. Certain charter services are available for a number of South American destinations. U.S. based airlines make up the majority of carriers.
The main terminal is equipped with travelers aid service desks and other tourist information offices, bank and post office. Luggage assistance is available for all travelers in the baggage claim areas. On the second level are shops and food courts, as well as frequent flier lounges operated by several airlines.
There are various ground transportation options at the airport, including taxis that can be found on the lower level curbs, and public buses that run directly to the central business district. Airport shuttles serving the many nearby hotels are usually free with an accompanying reservation. Car rental service desks are on the ground floor of the main terminal hall. The airport is connected by parkway to the main east-west freeway in San Juan, making for an easy commute to the center of town.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport has recently been undergoing a major renovation that will redivide several of the concourses; this upgrade is scheduled for completion in 2011.
