La Paz El Alto International LPB/SLLP

El Alto International Airport LPB/SLLP, is located in the town of El Alto, Bolivia and is a short 8 mile ride down the mountain to the city of La Paz, Bolivia. A joint public/ military airport, El Alto International Airport  is the 3rd busiest airport in Bolivia behind Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s Viru Viru International Airport and Jorge Wilsterman International Airport in Cochabamba Bolivia.

El Alto International Airport  With 2 runways, 10/28 at 13121 feet is a concrete runway and another parallel grass runway 10L/28R at 6725 feet. With a 13121 foot long runway the airport should be capable of handling the largest of the worlds airlines. Yet , the problem in El Alto International Airport is the altitude of the airport. Siting at a altitude 13,325 feet in the Andes Mountains of South America, El Alto International Airport is one of the World’s Highest Commercial Airports in the world behind Qamdo Bangda Airport in Tibet  at an astounding altitude of 14,219. El Alto International Airport is South America’s
Highest Commercial Airport
.

La Paz Bolivia El Alto International Airport Inaugurated in 1969, today El Alto International Airport  has become a limited International player. Due to the high altitude and low density of air at 13,325 feet, planes need a higher airspeed for landing and takeoffs, thus the long length of the runway. Takeoff and landings are limited to surrounding airports in Bolivia, and neighboring Santiago, Chile and Lima, Peru.
American Airlines is the only link to North America with flights landing in El Alto International Airport from Miami. Flight time from Miami to El Alto International Airport is approximately 6 1/2 hours.

El Alto International Airport  is a hub for Bolivia’s AeroSur Airline. The airport has 7 parking spots with 3 jet bridges, a 1 story terminal provides limited facilities for the traveling public.  A restaurant, snack bar, bank, money exchange as well as car rental and hotel information can be found in the terminal.
