Jags McCartney International Airport GDT/MBGT

JAGS McCartney International Airport, or Grant Turk International Airport, is the second largest of seven airports in the two archipelagos of Turks and Caicos Islands. This airport is named after James Alexander George Smith McCartney, the first Chief Minister of the United Kingdom overseas territory of Turks and Caicos. The international airport is one mile south of the town of Cockburn Town on Grand Turk Island, the largest of the Turk Islands.

As the island itself is only around seven square miles with a population of over 5,000 people, it is remarkable that Cockburn Town contains an international airport like JAGS McCartney International Airport. This airport receives flights from well known airliners including US Air, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Continental Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. The airport also houses flights from SkyKing, a local Caribbean airliner, and Air Turks and Caicos, an airliner that has domestic, international, and charter flights. Both SkyKing and Air Turks and Caicos call the two archipelagos of Turks and Caicos home.

With an internationally renowned airliner such as American Airlines, the trip from Miami to JAGS is about 80 minutes. As a popular tourist destination, JAGS McCartney International Airport feels the flux of at least a portion of the well over 80,000 tourists that grace the two archipelagos every year. Although the airport is not open twenty-four hours a day, the airport still receives aircrafts from several destinations including cities in the United States such as Miami, Atlanta, Boston and New York. The airport, coinciding with Providenciales Airport, also takes flights in from London and other islands in the Caribbean such as Jamaica, Haiti, and other islands in Turks and Caicos.

Although the airport is on a somewhat small island, JAGS McCartney International Airport is a medium sized airport. The airport consists of a paved and lighted asphalt runway that is 6,362 feet long. It is because of this that airplanes as large as Boeing 757s and Airbus A321s are available to passengers at the JAGS McCartney International Airport.

JAGS McCartney International Airport is a full functioning airport with accommodations for passengers and maintenance for incoming and outgoing airplanes. Like many medium sized airports, this international airport has car rental and taxi services that help take its passengers throughout the Grand Turk Island.
