The Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia is such a popular tourist destination that it’s served by two airports. Hewanorra International Airport is the larger of the two, a Fire Category 9 transport facility capable of handling Boeing 747s, Airbus A330s, Airbus A340s or aircrafts of similar size. For the past five years, the number of through Hewanorra International Airport’s gates has increased every year. In 2007, that number was 500,000. The airport is administered by the Saint Lucia Air and Seaports Authority (SLASPA,)
Hewanorra International Airport is located on the southern tip of Saint Lucia, 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of the capital city of Castries, 2.5 miles (four kilometers) north of the old sugar plantation town of Vieux-Fort. The East Coast road provides easy access from practically anywhere else on the island.
At present, Hewanorra International Airport has but only a single terminal, receiving daily flights from New York, Miami and Atlanta in the US as well as well as London (UK,) Toronto (Canada,) and Frankfurt (Germany,) and other Caribbean islands. Air traffic to the Hewanorra facility has increased so steadily over the past five years that in February 2011, a major airport expansion project is slated to begin that will add another terminal, a modernized control tower and a new air cargo facility. The cost of the new construction is expected to be approximately 160 million dollars.
The new construction will expand Hewanorra International’s existing guest amenities. Presently the airport has only a handful of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops and its small Bureau de Change is only open for a limited number of hours each day. The construction of an additional terminal will permit there to be more of these passenger extras.
The new construction is also expected to expand Hewanorra International Airport’s parking capacities. Presently the airport only has room for 100 cars. The airport also has car rental agencies where you can choose among Alto, Avis, Budget or a local company, Saint Lucia Car Rental. Hewanorra International Airport is also well served by local public transportation: Taxies are available just outside the airport complex to transport you to nearby Castries, Saint Lucia’s capital (an hour’s ride.) Public buses stop just outside the terminal on the East Coast Road.
The airport itself has no hotel facilities but there are three hotels in nearby Vieux-Fort: Juliette's Lodge, the Kabran, and the Skyway Inn which is also a conference facility that can accommodate up to 400 delegates or guests.
