Named after the islands first premier in 1976, Grantley Adams International Airport is located in the township of Christ Church, Barbados. Serving over two million passengers each year, this airport operates as an access point for the entire Eastern Caribbean region and is a central port for air travel. It connects the Caribbean with United States, Canada and all parts of Europe.
The Grantley Adams International Airport is positioned approximately eight miles from the heart of Bridgetown, the islands capital. To reach the grounds from the capital, it is a thirty minute ride by car on the ABC Highway. Highway-7 also provides an alternate route to the facility. The airports only runway lies from east to west so that planes take off and land in conjunction with the regions trade winds.
In 2000, Grantley Adams International Airport began to undergo a series of upgrades that would take several years and more than $150 million to complete. Numerous modern amenities were added including a baggage hall, shopping area, departure lounge, food court, customs area and various government departments. The expanded arrival hall offers extra room for immigration processing, updated check-in faculties and a larger baggage claim area. The renovated airport enjoyed its grand opening on October of 2006. It is regarded by many as one of the most state-of-the-art airports in the Caribbean.
Convenient facilities are located at Grantley Adams International Airport, including a bank, post office, pharmacy, chapel and a refurbished parking area. Accommodations, including special lifts and restrooms, are also available for the disabled. The shopping square offers a variety of duty-free goods including jewelry, souvenirs, cosmetics, clothing, tobacco and alcohol. Inside the departure lounge, there are a range of restaurants that feature fast food, Caribbean cuisine and gourmet coffee.
The new Club Caribbean Lounge was designed with first class and business class travelers in mind. This area is equipped with wireless internet, meeting rooms, conferencing capabilities, fax and showers.
The British Airways Concorde Museum is also located on airport grounds. On display at the exhibit is a retired British Airways Concorde G-BOAE. Visitors can enjoy the Concorde Experience that includes a guided tour of the supersonic plane and a simulated flight course. The museum is located within walking distance from the Grantley Adams International Airport compound.
