Runway and Taxiway Signs

Runway taxi sign

 Taxiway Intersection Sign
You ever wonder what all those Runway and Taxiway Signs mean at the airport?
You sit there in your window seat trying to figure out what that little yellow sign with a “Y” and arrows pointing in different directions with a black square and the letter “N” says? It is not something simple like working out the rules of  foxy bingo online or doing an easy crossword, which are pretty easy to learn about. If you don't know very much about these signs they can be very confusing.
What the Airport Info Site will try and do is answer a lot of your questions on typical Runway and Taxiway Signs that you might see on your next flight.
Your typical airport is several square miles in size with Runway and Taxiways intersecting this large area, now some airports might only have one Runway and one Taxiway or you might be flying into New York John F. Kennedy which has 4 main Runways and what seems like a hundreds of Taxiways. Well there had to be a way to communicate with the pilots without over taxing the ground controllers and that is where all these Runway and Taxiway Signs have come about. So let’s get started.

Taxiway Centerline Marking

Taxiway Centerline Marking
One of the first signs or marking you will probably see as they are pushing you back from the gate is the Taxiway Centerline Marking, not only does this give the pilots direction into gates and along taxiways, the most important thing it is telling the pilot that if you keep the nose wheel on this line , your wings will be clear of fixed objects on and around the tarmac or ramp area. This does not include, baggage carts vehicles and so forth.
